Case-study:
Out of isolation and the role of negative reinforcement for caregivers
Autism is often referred to as a ‘communication disorder’ due to many struggling to engage with others in a socially appropriate manner. This difficulty can lead to being labelled as anti-social or to assumptions of not wanting to interact at all. The following case study presents an adolescent who began displaying numerous inappropriate behaviours, including aggression towards others and thus, becoming extremely isolated. The intervention package resulted in a significant decrease in aggression and a positive return to social interactions, including leaving their home on foot for the first time in nearly two years.
