Case study:
Mission Impossible – Restraint Reduction in the Home Environment?

The usage of restraint with those with intellectual disabilities, unfortunately relatively common, has been shown to not only be ineffective in reducing behaviours such as self-injury and aggression, but rather, may act as a reinforcer for these behaviours instead. The following case study presents the introduction of a behaviour analytic programme to the home environment of a 14-year-old boy with autism who engaged in frequent and intense self-injury and aggression towards others.
